Discovering the Art of Echizen Washi: a prestigious washi paper

What is Echizen Washi?

Echizen is a name of a region in Fukui prefecture, which is located on the western coast of the Japan Sea, in the Hokuriku region of Honshu the main island of Japan. Echizen has a long history of washi making dating back over 1500 years.

Washi is a traditional Japanese paper that is known for its strength, durability, and unique texture. The term ‘washi’ literally translates to ‘Wa’ – ‘Japanese’, and ‘Shi’ – ‘paper’, and it is made using fibres from the bark of three specific plants: paper mulberry bush, mitsumata shrub or gampi tree.

The Unique Qualities of Echizen Washi

Echizen Washi stands out for its remarkable quality, durability, and beauty. Its strength and flexibility make it ideal for a variety of uses, from calligraphy and printmaking to lantern screens, Japanese bank notes and, of course, Origami paper. The complex textures and natural fibres give a unique aesthetic that is both delicate and resilient.

Crafting Echizen Washi

Crafting Echizen washi involves a meticulous and traditional process that has been refined over centuries. Here are the steps to craft Echizen washi:

Harvesting and Preparing Bark: Kozo bark is harvested, steamed, stripped, and dried.

Cooking Bark: The bark is boiled in a lye solution, then rinsed to remove impurities.

Beating Fibers: The fibres are beaten into a pulp.

Forming Sheets: The pulp is mixed with water and neri (to separate fibres), then scooped onto a nagashizuki screen (a screen mould made of bamboo).

Pressing Sheets: Wet sheets are pressed to remove excess water.

Drying Sheets: Sheets are dried on wooden boards.

This labour-intensive traditional process produces high-quality, durable paper. Each step requires attention to detail to ensure the unique qualities of Echizen washi are achieved. This process not only creates a functional product but also preserves a significant cultural heritage.

Preserving the tradition

The Echizen Washi craft continues to thrive today thanks to the dedication of local artisans who have passed down their skills through the years. Their commitment means that this ancient art not only survives but also keeps going strong, evolving with the times while staying true to its roots.

Echizen Washi is not simply a craft; it is a cultural treasure acknowledged by the Japanese government as an Important Intangible Cultural Property.

In today's world dominated by digital media, Echizen Washi is a beautiful reminder of the lasting power of tradition and the timeless beauty of handcrafted art.

Eco-friendly

Washi paper stands out as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional paper because it is often produced using traditional methods that emphasize natural materials harvested sustainably, low energy use due to the handmade process, and minimal chemical processing. This results in low or no harmful residue when recycling and biodegrading. Additionally, washi is strong and long-lasting, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
