Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was born in the shogun's capital of Edo (now Tokyo) and considered to be the last great master of the Japanese woodblock print.

In the Japan of his day, his classic Japanese prints fostered a new and far-reaching appreciation for nature in art, and in the west, his work influenced artists such as Whistler, Cezanne and Gaughin.
