Slow Living Garden Inspiration for May
As May unfolds, gardens come to life—fresh leaves, soft breezes, and longer days invite us to slow down and reconnect with nature. With the bank holiday weekend just around the corner, it’s the perfect opportunity to pause, unwind and enjoy a little extra time at home or in the garden. We hope you’re able to take a moment for yourself, whether that’s a quiet cup of tea, time outdoors, or simply a slower pace of day!
Inspired by this gentle seasonal shift, now is the perfect time to create a calm corner at home: a space dedicated to stillness, mindfulness, and simple beauty. In this blog, we’ll share a few simple ideas and inspirations to help you create your own Japanese-inspired retreat at home.
🍃 Start with Simplicity
At the heart of Japanese-inspired interiors is the idea of ‘less, but better.’ Choose a small area, could be a windowsill, a side table or a quiet corner… and keep it uncluttered.
Focus on just a few meaningful pieces:
- A ceramic tea set
- A small vase or seasonal greenery
- A decorative object that brings you joy
This approach reflects the beauty of restraint, allowing each item to breathe and be appreciated.
🫖 Create a Tea Ritual
A calm corner becomes truly special when it invites you to pause. Incorporating a tea ritual is a simple way to do this.
Whether it’s morning green tea or an afternoon herbal blend, preparing tea mindfully can become a daily moment of stillness. The tactile experience of pouring, the warmth of the cup, and the gentle aroma all help ground your senses.
A beautifully crafted Japanese tea set not only enhances the ritual but also becomes part of the visual calm of your space.

🌸 Bring the Outdoors In
Nature is essential to this theme. Even the smallest touch. A single stem, a sprig of blossom, or a leafy branch—can transform your corner.
Take inspiration from seasonal changes:
- Fresh greens in May
- Blossoms or soft florals in a small vase
- Natural textures like wood or stone on a simple rectangular plate
This subtle connection to the outdoors echoes the feeling of a peaceful garden, even indoors.

🕯️ Engage the Senses with Incense
Scent plays a powerful role in creating atmosphere. Lighting incense can instantly shift the mood, helping you unwind after a busy day.
Choose soft, natural fragrances, such as sandalwood or floral notes, to create a gentle, lingering calm. The ritual of lighting incense itself encourages you to slow down and be present.

🎐 Add Gentle Sound with Wind Chimes
Sound is often overlooked, yet it can deeply shape how a space feels. A softly chiming bell in the breeze brings an immediate sense of calm and awareness.
Japanese wind chimes are traditionally hung near windows or in gardens during the warmer months. Their light, delicate tones signal the presence of wind, encouraging a quiet moment of reflection.
Cast iron wind chimes offer a deeper, more resonant sound - grounding and meditative
Ceramic wind chimes create a softer, lighter tone - gentle and soothing
Even a faint chime drifting through an open window can transform your space into something serene and atmospheric.

🪭Add Movement with Fans
Japanese fans are not only practical but beautifully expressive. Displayed in your calm corner, they bring a sense of lightness and movement.
Their delicate designs often inspired by nature, add a subtle artistic touch. On warmer days, they also offer a simple, mindful way to cool down, connecting function with tradition.

🏡 A Space to Pause
Your calm corner doesn’t need to be perfect. It simply needs to feel like a place where you can pause even for a few minutes.
In a busy world, these small rituals and thoughtful spaces can make a meaningful difference. They remind us to slow down, notice the season and find beauty in everyday moments.
